The Challenge

Medan is a city of hidden gems, but its existing digital information was fragmented. Travelers often struggled to find curated, reliable, and visually appealing guides.

The primary challenges were:

• Information Overload: Too many destinations with no clear categorization (e.g., food vs. history vs. nature).

• Lack of Visual Appeal: Old websites didn't reflect the vibrant, modern energy of Medan today.

• Poor Navigation: No seamless way for a tourist to "plan a day" or find locations based on their current vicinity.

Our Solution

We designed the "Discover Medan" platform to act as a digital concierge, prioritizing ease of use and high-quality visual storytelling.

• Curated Experience Buckets: We moved away from a generic list and created "Interest-Based" categories: The Culinary Trail, The Heritage Walk, and The Urban Explorer. Each category uses a distinct color palette and icon set for better psychological mapping.

• Interactive "Day Trip" Planner: We designed a drag-and-drop itinerary builder. Users can pick their favorite spots, and the UI automatically generates a logical travel route, integrated with map APIs for real-time navigation.

• The "Culinary Map" Interface: Since Medan is Indonesia’s culinary capital, we built a high-impact food directory. It features professional food photography, "Must-Try" badges, and a "Halal/Non-Halal" filter to accommodate the city’s diverse visitors.

• Responsive & Offline-Ready Design: Understanding that travelers are often on the go with unstable signals, we prioritized a "Mobile-First" layout with lightweight assets and cached data for key landmark info.

Results

The redesign transformed the perception of Medan from a "transit city" to a "destination city." The platform saw a high engagement rate on the Itinerary Planner and provided local businesses and heritage sites with a professional platform to be discovered by international tourists.
